manipuri designer talks about the moment when a pattern is born

Manipuri's designs are born from small discoveries in everyday life.
Designers will share the story of how their patterns come to life.

NAKA

WORK|Antique Recipe, Montgolfier Balloon, etc.

Q1: What was your inspiration when you created "Antique Recipes"?
A: It all started when I came across Mrs. Beeton's Household Economics, which was used as a guide for householders during the Victorian era in England.
I was drawn to the classic worldview of the book and wanted to express it in a design.

Q2: You have painted many balloons in the past, but how is this "Montgolfier Balloon" different from the others?
A: I experimented with how to express the systematic, inorganic image of a balloon body by deliberately using a rough touch.

REKI

WORK|Monopoli, Cross Stitch Bandana, Tarot, etc.

Q1: What was your inspiration when you created "Monopoli"?

A: My personal theme is "the feeling of traveling somewhere in the world while painting."
I created "Monopoli" because I thought it would be fun to have a scarf that you could take with you on your travels, play with, and wear.

While I was working on this project, I happened to have a chance to talk with some Italian friends, and it occurred to me that by combining the history of Columbus and Marco Polo discovering new continents during the Age of Discovery with Monopoli's board games, I could create a design that is typical of Manipuri, with a vintage feel.

Q2: Many motifs appear in Tarot, but do you have a favorite pattern?
A: This design brings together all the tarot card illustrations that were published monthly in last year's manipuri fortune-telling column, "Reijun Sensei's Color Therapy," on one page.

Actually, my favorite design is the one in which the December "moon" is disguised as Santa Claus.
However, at the time of making the scarf, the fortune-telling illustration had not yet been completed, so I designed the December card upside down (bottom right) (lol).

In the end, it ended up being a dream design, but I liked it so much that I used it subtly on this year's Christmas limited edition packaging.

MAIKOS

WORK| Ray Light , Poster , Vivace Tassel , etc.

Q1: What was your inspiration when you created "Tassel"?
A: It is often not a single event, but rather the combination of multiple elements that ultimately become the source, but this time the starting point was the feeling I had when I was drawing the "Ribbon Harness" previously, that "I want to try drawing more of just the tassels."

Also, the various tassels I saw at a carpet specialty store were a deciding factor, solidifying the direction. The title was also decided on at an early stage as "Vivace (lively)," so I proceeded with the production while always keeping that image in mind.

Q2: This work incorporates a different style from your usual style. What is the reason behind this?
A: I like to draw with a lot of detail, but when I'm drawing a rough sketch, loose strokes and bold images sometimes come to mind naturally.
In those cases, I try not to stick to my traditional style, but instead reflect it directly in the design.

When creating multiple designs in one season, I try to be conscious of not being too biased in my approach.

NARIKO

WORK| Record , etc.

Q1: What was your inspiration when you created "Record"?
A: There is always a radio playing in the office, so we hear the latest trending songs.
In recent years, city pop has been attracting attention again, and its distinctive sound has subconsciously left an impression on me.

I came up with this design by trying to combine it with the motif of "records," which has always interested me.

Q2: Is there anything you keep in mind when drawing new patterns?
A: I always value the feeling that something is "new" or "cute."
Of course, it's cute when worn as a scarf, but I think it's very important that people feel that it's cute as a picture the moment they see it for the first time.

By doing so, I hope to encourage people who have been interested in scarves but have not been able to try them to pick one up.
